Used to do Jalopnik Detroit when that was a thing. Now just kinda here and there.

Aaron, appreciate the article. I look forward to you posting more as the bankruptcy stuff proceeds... I have a feeling your takes will be interesting and helpful to my own understanding of what the heck is going on. Read more

One day....in the not so recent future all that land and those building s will be worth a fortune. For example look at Long Island City in NY. The place was full of old decrepit and sometimes abandoned huge warehouses and factories from when NY truly was the empire state. I remember as a kid how ugly everything Read more

Ok, here's what I see as an outsider (and, yes, I'm truly an outsider who lives in a small town in Oklahoma). We have a place here, in America, that due to the economic casualties of the last few years, is in financial ruin. Detroit has made tons of changes to try to rehabilitate the area and rebuild its Read more

I bet there's some really awesome stuff in these buildings

This is the part OCP shows up to take over...

Well, it wouldn't be the first Packard plant to be rehabbed into luxury apartments. You have to wish him luck on this, it's a fascinating plan, but it's going to make the Piazza at Schmidt's look like a bathroom remodel.

The Packard Plant is also well known as being the site of several very important (if you're into the scene anyways) raves from the mid to late 90's, including a few of Richie Hawtin's most epic parties (SPASTIK!). If you're into the culture, this site should be saved and memorialized just for this alone. Read more

Why does his race matter? What is the point out making an issue of the fact that he's a WHITE entrepreneur? Would it be more ok if he was black? Would he then, through his skin color, have "earned" the right to try and revitalize the plant? Do tell. Read more

I'm not sure how this is going to get done. Aaron, again, you've covered the story well, but maybe we can get in touch with this gentleman and dig into his plans and see what he thinks can be done in 15 years. Read more

Unless Donald Trump is ponying up the money for this, I hate to say it but I just don't see anything happening with this. Do both these buildings need to be saved? Train Depot, absolutely, look we already lost one great landmark (Tiger Stadium) we don't need to lose another. When I come home to visit and I'm Read more

so how many committee members wives had to blow people at ESPN to get this to happen. I get 15 sec into the above video and stop because YAWN. You know what it boils down to people are afraid of a city that is on a slow but strong comeback. Enjoy it down south in the retarded heat, but when my great city rises from Read more

It's a shame. I almost wish they chose chose Detroit first just to give the city a shot..... if it is a wildly successful event at COTA in Austin it will be harder to get the X games in Detroit, ever. I wish that COTA would have been a back up for the following year in case the logistics just weren't ideal during a Read more

:/ Detroit is the perfect spot. You could rent Michigan Central from Matty and just hold the whole event in Corktown and Mexican town. Rally cross jumping the train viaduct after flying past the defunct igloo shaped Mexicantown police sub station and landing next to the train station before completing the course Read more

Errr what is a Bank doing with money not in a safe or even a lock box? I think that blows my mind more than a kid robbing a bank. Its like Bank Employee 101, "keep money SAFE, because I WORK AT A BANK" Its the SOLE PURPOSE of this place. Read more

I could never in my life imagine breaking into a bank at the age of 12. At 12 years old,I was too busy playing Gran Turismo 2,watching Motor Week,Car and Driver, movies from the 80s and 90s when movies were worth watching, and trying to see which bone I could break while riding my bike. I dont even know what to say to Read more
