In terms of hype, the 2020 Toyota Supra is the car equivalent of Avengers: Endgame and the last season of Game of Thrones, put together. After more than 20 years one of the most beloved sports cars of a generation is finally back—but now it’s automatic-only and curiously sporting BMW guts. Can it deliver on all that hype? I’m about to find out.
Next week is the media launch of the new Supra, and as the Jalopnik staff’s resident longtime Supra stan and de facto BMW expert, I was uniquely qualified to try it out. (Actually, I pulled the Boss Card to get on this one, because I never do anything fun anymore.)
We briefly drove a pre-production prototype last year and came away impressed, with writer Neil Briscoe finding it to be a worthy competitor to the Porsche Cayman. But now it’s time to try the real thing on real American roads, and at Summit Point Motorsports Park.
So before we head out that way: What do you want to know about it?
I’m extremely curious to see how BMW’s newest rear-wheel drive platform and 335 horsepower turbo inline-six come together here. Will the car feel like just another BMW—honestly, not a bad thing—or will it have some surprises I didn’t expect? Will the lack of a manual gearbox leave me wanting? Will I be left wondering what an all-Toyota car would’ve been like, or will it deliver just fine as-is?
No clue. But if you want to know anything about it, drop some comments. Driving impressions are embargoed until mid-May, but I will keep your thoughts in mind when I get behind the wheel. Besides its performance and driving feel, what else do you wanna know?
Remember: I’m doing this for you.
