The 2019 BMW Z4 Finally Gives Us A Good-Looking Z4

I know I’m going to get a lot of hate for this take, but I don’t care. I gotta LIVE MY TRUTH. I gotta FOLLOW MY BLISS. And my bliss, for this exact moment, is what looks to be the 2019 BMW Z4, revealed in these patent drawings way before the curtain officially drops.

These drawings come to us from the Netherlands’ Autoweek, and originate from an unspecified patent office. We have been unable to obtain the originals.

Because these are mere patent drawings, I gotta be upfront and be like “THIS COULD ALL CHANGE.” But if you compare it to BMW’s Z4 “concept” from last year, you can see it’s pretty dang similar:

The “concept” basically just looks like a slightly angrier version, with cut-outs in the hood. It’s probably mad because someone cut holes in its hood. Rude.

(Please note: Jalopnik is very pro holes-in-hood, as an official stance.)

The Z4s (and before them, the gorgeous Z3) always had the right proportions overall. But where the previous generation Z4 looks like someone sat on its face, which some people enjoy but is never truly an aesthetic choice, and the first-generation Z4 just looked like a sad dork, this third-generation Z4 actually looks good. It’s aggressive without looking unnecessarily mean. It’s not overly done. It’s balanced.

It’s right.

And it’ll probably come with the good engines, too. BMW has officially said there will be some sort of Z4 M40i, with an electronically-controlled differential and the same 3.0-liter turbo inline-six as the one in the M240i, which is an extremely good car. But if I had to guess, I’d flesh out the entire range with all the engines that are in the BMW 2 Series, starting with the 2.0-liter turbo four that’s good for 181 horsepower, and going from there.

Will we get a full-on Z4M? Probably. Nothing’s ever stopped BMW from making every single ludicrous variety of overpowered monster before.
