You know what’s a good engine? That 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six in the current Porsche 911 GT3, the one that screams all the way to 9,000 RPM. Mm. Yeah. If Porsche took that and stuck it in the upcoming 718 Boxster Spyder, that’d make my year. And it’s only February.
That’s certainly the rumor, anyways, asserts Autocar, which also cites no sources. But it’s still fun to speculate. The outlet reports that the GT3's engine will take the place of the current 718's 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four. Additionally, the car will also supposedly offer a six-speed manual as standard.
This is all very similar to the Cayman GT4 rumors we heard last May. The 4.0-liter flat-six will probably be detuned from its current 500 horsepower output because, well, we can’t have a Cayman or a Boxster more powerful than the GT3.
The next 718 Boxster Spyder will also very likely follow in past Spyder fashion by stripping away excess body weight, omitting things like air conditioning, a radio, cabin insulation and door handles. It’ll have a tent-top roof which you have to manually remove or attach.
We have no official word yet on the 718 Boxster Spyder, but it’ll probably happen and be very, very expensive for very, very little car. Such is the way of Porsche. Still, though! A manual, mid-engined Porsche with a 4.0-liter flat-six. That’s like the Triple Crown of the Porsche parts bin.
We have reached out to Porsche for comment and will update if we hear back.
