Earlier this week, we brought you the story of a driver in Vancouver who was fined 368 Canadian dollars for playing Pokémon Go while driving. Three’s a trend in journalism, so we’re not quite there yet, but Vancouver police now at least have back-to-back hits this week, thanks to this driver whom they stopped with a tablet and iPhone strapped to his steering wheel. It’s not illegal?
The driver was fined $81 because he didn’t have his driver’s license, but, for the very high-tech steering wheel set up, which doesn’t violate any Canadian traffic laws, he was let off with a lecture, according to the CBC.
From their report:
“Based on the information collected during their conversation, our officer decided that educating the driver about the devices would be the most effective approach,” Const. Jason Doucette said in a statement.
Which makes sense, I guess, when you think about it, since if you’re not actually using the devices you’ve ham-fistedly tied to your steering wheel while driving, you’re not actually distracted. It’s possible he’s tied the iPhone and tablet there to use while parked. Or maybe his car is just his office, and there’s also a desktop computer strapped to the front seat. He’s wearing sweatpants, in any case. Seems like it would be a comfortable office.
