Early on Sunday morning, a police officer was on patrol in Alpharetta, Georgia, when a McLaren drove very quickly by. The officer chased the zooming car, starting a five-mile pursuit that saw the McLaren top out at 155 mph. Finally, the McLaren pulled over and stopped, its brakes smoking. You might be surprised to learn that the driver had been drinking, according to police.

From WSB:

“[The McLaren] came to such a sudden stop that there was smoke coming from the brakes,” [Jason Muenzer, a police spokesman] said.

He said the driver, identified as Dwayne Pope, didn’t have much of an explanation about why he turned the highway into a test track.

[...]

An incident report said Pope’s eyes were glassy and that he smelled of alcohol. When asked how much he’d had to drink, the report said Pope told the officer “not much.”

After failing a field sobriety test, police said they took Pope to jail for DUI, speeding, failing to maintain his lane and for driving with an expired tag.

According to Patch, the McLaren was a 720S, which would make it one of the first to be delivered, since McLaren just unveiled the car last March in Geneva. The 720S’s top speed is 220 mph, and it starts at around $285,000, a price that, if you can afford it, means you can also afford to take it to the track for your high speed thrills. Not while drunk though. Never drive drunk.
