“I got a call on Friday night to say that the Prime Minister was on his way round to look at one of our cars,” used car salesman Iain Harris told The Daily Mail. “I thought it was one of my mates, winding me up.” Nope. David Cameron himself showed up and bought a £1,495 economy car.
“I couldn’t believe it when he turned up. He spent about half an hour looking the car over. He said it had to be something made in the UK. I joked that he wouldn’t want a red car,” said Harris according to The Telegraph.
(Opposite to the United States, red is the more “liberal” Labor Party color in England while blue is used by the Conservative Party of which Cameron is a member.)
Apparently the British PM arrived at the Witney Used Car Centre in Minster Lovell, Oxfordshire on Friday, looked at a 1.2-liter 2004 Nissan Micra for about half an hour, came back the next day and plunked down £1,495 (about $2,200) for it on a card and drove off with a security detail in the wings.
“He said he’d sorted out his insurance, and he drove off, just like that.” Harris said to the Daily Mail. “He was very friendly and down to earth, just like any other bloke buying a car for the wife.”
Heads of state, they’re just like us! Though the Telegraph points out that Cameron is “more used to being driven around in a £200,000 Jaguar XJ that has been extensively modified and armored to protect against terror attacks.”
