We knew McLaren was working on a more practical version of its brilliant 570S, and the wait is finally over. Meet McLaren’s first hatchback, the 570GT. It’s no 2+2, but the most spacious mid-engined supercar.
The GT will retail for $198,950, about ten percent more than the standard 570S.
For the extra money, you get an additional 7.8 cubic feet of cargo space with easy loading thanks to the new side-hinged glass hatch. McLaren also threw in a bunch of extra equipment as standard, including the panoramic sunroof, soft-close doors, electronic steering column and seat adjustment, a leather covered parcel shelf with luggage restraint hooks, extended interior trim into the hatchback and a 1,280-watt, 12-speaker Bower & Wilkins stereo system.
Just like on the 570S, you can still choose between two main trim levels depending on how sporty or luxurious you wish your 570GT to be, but the redesigned aluminum panels and additional trim adds more than 80 pounds to the car’s claimed weight already, which climbs to 2,976 pounds as a result.
The added weight and the unchanged drivetrain means the GT will be slightly slower than the 570S, with the 0-62mph taking 3.4 seconds instead of 3.2, and the 0-124-mph lasting for 9.8 seconds compared to the 570S’ 9.5. On the plus side, top speed remains unchanged at 204 mph.
Since the Sport Series is the first McLaren with a glovebox, there’s no question that the new 570GT is almost as practical as a Golf GTI. Those daily driven Porsche 911s better watch out.
