BMW is adding a Competition Package this year to the options list on the 2016 M3 sedan, M4 coupe and even the convertible. Don’t get too hung up on the word “Competition,” but it actually looks like a nice appearance package with a bonus 19 horsepower.
For what is yet an undisclosed amount of money, the soon-to-be optional Competition Package features a more aggressive tune for your M3 or M4 that BMW claims will yield 19 horsepower “that takes the output to 450.”
They say that translates to one tenth of a second faster in a stopped-to-60 MPH sprint on all the cars; so down to 4.0 seconds for the M3 and M4 coupe, 4.3 seconds for the convertible.
Adaptive M Suspension “which features new springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, along with reconfigured driving modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+)” is also part of the kit along with more aggressive Active M Differential on the rear axle and DSC Dynamic Stability Control setup.
I think that means the ride will be a little harsher, a little more precise.
Those who tick the box just because it’s there (you know who you are) will happy to know the Competition Package advertises itself with exclusive throwing-star style 20" wheels, lightweight sport seats and seat belts with the M colors stitched into them.
Man, look at those blue and purple beauties! Correction: I’ve been told it’s blue and slightly darker blue now, which, upon closer inspection, yep.
Most of the chrome bits outside the car are dipped in black. It really is a slick looking configuration, I wouldn’t be surprised if BMW starts selling this trim without the rougher-ride part of the package. How sharp are the curves in your office park, anyway?
I really like how this Competition Package picked up and ran with a few subtle, retro-but-timeless styling cues. That’s you how make a future classic, my friends.
