There’s a tried and true recipe for car ownership that everyone should go through: buy a cheap car, neglect it, and see how long it’ll last. Sometimes you’ll be rewarded with resilience and that $500 beater lasts longer than something costing four times as much. Other times, you get what you pay for and you’ll wind up on fire, stranded on the side of the road.
This week’s Worst Car Story is courtesy of Adam Clark Estes from Gizmodo. He bought an old Volvo station wagon for sale a few years back solely because it was the most luxurious European car he could find on the cheap.
After realizing the car’s persistent oil problem would be more expensive to fix than the entire cost of the car, he valiantly (read: stupidly) nursed it as long as he could until one day, the Volvo gave in. Check out the video to hear Adam explain it better than I ever can.
