There’s stunting, and then there’s stunting. Soaring through the air, doing a barrel roll or a flip, or generally just jumping canyons on a motorcycle, stunts are an integral part of the vehicular experience. Even if you don’t always stick the landing, the craziest is always the best.
Obviously, Evel Knievel is the once-and-always king of stunts. He brought the genre to the mainstream in a way that’d never been seen before, breaking damn near every bone in his body. And it was great.
But when you think about it, while his stunts were genre-defining, they weren’t really spectacular by today’s standards. He would just sorta jump things, and that was about it. It was a basic formula. Ride pretty quickly on a motorcycle, hit a ramp, fly, hopefully land it. But nowadays we’ve got barrel rolls and loops, fire and underwater extremes.
