I think if I were to put together a list of the sexiest coupes of all time, the case could easily be made that the shark-nosed BMW E9 deserves to be somewhere near the top. BMW must know this too, because it’s they’re set to debut a modern version of the E9 — specifically, the 3.0 CSL that became so successful in motorsports.
BMW announced today that it will unveil the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este next week. I can’t even pronounce that, so I assume I wasn’t invited. Anyway, BMW promises a coupe that’s lightweight, beautiful and aerodynamically functional:
The BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage is a nod to the engineering achievement exemplified by the BMW 3.0 CSL in its lightweight design and performance. The Hommage draws on the character of the earlier model and endows it with cutting-edge materials to translate it into the present in a new and exciting guise.
The full teaser shot is below.
Not bad so far. Can’t wait to see the rest.
BMW made the Karmann-built E9, aka New Six, from 1968 to 1975 until it was replaced by the original 6-Series.
Packing a variety of smooth inline-six engines, it was a potent performer in its time, especially in 3.0 CSL form, where it proved a strong contender for years in touring car racing and was dubbed the “Batmobile” for its intimidating aero package.
Remember, BMW has a habit of turning their concept cars into reality more often than not, and the M1 Hommage ultimately evolved into the i8, even if stubborn people say otherwise.
So what will happen to this thing? Who knows, but I wouldn’t say no to an i-something (i6?) sexy coupe with hybrid and electric power. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s wait to see what the 3.0 CSL Hommage looks like first.
