Hey, that turned out okay. Get used to the way the Volkswagen Sport Coupe GTE Concept looks, because it's being billed as the future of VW design. Watch as it zooms into the future! There are lasers in the future!

Here's the lowdown: it's a five-door hatch on the MQB modular platform, same as the new Golf and its many cousins, but it's idealized as slotting above the Passat and CC but below the Phaeton. No word yet on production though.

It's also being billed as having "initial glimpses of a new design era" for VW, which is good as it's pretty attractive, if even more Audi-ish than ever before. Not that that's a bad thing. I like how the LEDs merge into the front grille.

In terms of power the Sport Coupe GTE Concept packs a 3.0-liter plug-in hybrid V6 with two electric motors, one front and one rear, that has up to 374 horsepower with all-wheel drive. Volkswagen says it can do zero to 62 mph in five seconds flat all while returning 118 MPG on the European cycle. In E-Mode, the 114 horsepower motor at the rear can drive the car alone.

Like screens? This car's got 'em, including a 10.1-inch central touch screen and two of the same on the back headrests, as well as a 12.3-inch tablet-looking thing for the A/C controls.

I like where they're going with this car, for the most part. We'll see what parts of it, if any, make it to real cars someday.
