The Hot Volkswagen Golf R Wagon Is Real And It's Coming To The U.S.*

The Volkswagen Golf R Wagon we spotted in Arizona was no desert illusion, but instead a peek at the production-intent wagon version of the 296 horsepower Golf R hot hatch. Oh, and they're bringing one to the LA Auto Show.

Just like the three-door Golf R, the wagon (which they call "Variant" for some very German reason) version has a 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo four putting down all that power to each of its giant 18-/19-inch wheels through a six-speed DSG and VW's 4MOTION permanent AWD system.

It also gets similar bodywork and and a variation of the car's interior just, you know, more of it.

*Does this mean they're bringing it to the U.S.? Technically, because it's in Los Angeles. Does this mean they're going to sell it here? I would suspect the U.S. debut and fanfare would mean that they are, however, Volkswagen has pulled this trick on us before.

Let's put it this way, if they don't sell it here I think it's fair to say we've reached the preconditions under which, as a society, the social contract is ruptured to a point where it's ok to riot.
