This Alfa Romeo Concept Represents The Future We Needed

What you're looking at is the Alfa Romeo Alfasud Caimano concept designed by Giugiaro. It's perfect, isn't it?

It was originally shown at the Turin Motor Show in 1971 and is based on the production Alfasud's front-wheel-drive chassis. The Caimano is quite different than the rather plebian (for an Alfa) Alfasud, since that one doesn't look quite like a retro-futuristic spaceship.

See? Nice, but not quite a spaceship. Both designed by the same guy, somehow.

The Caimano concept used a 4 cylinder boxer motor which was good for a whopping 63 hp, but speed doesn't matter when you look this cool. It'll just give everyone more time to bask in your glory.

Did I mention the canopy roof? Oh yeah, you bet it has one. I don't need to explain how cool canopy roofs are.

You don't really need to look hard to see how this design foreshadowed sports cars to come–the O.G. Countach and Lancia Stratos spring to mind–but I really wish something this ridiculous came to production.

I mean, just look at it. It's perfect.
