Can A Tuned Diesel 3-Series Take Down The 2015 BMW M3?

Yesterday we asked you fine people which car or cars (or cars and motorcycles, or cars and drugs) you'd buy instead of the mighty 2015 BMW M4 or its sedan counterpart the M3. Over at the UK's Autocar, Steve Sutcliffe has an answer to that question that you might not expect.

The 425 horsepower M3 is an incredible, razor's edge sort of machine. No one is disputing that. But in this latest video test, Sutcliffe says he thinks the Alpina D3 might be a superior opponent.

Yes, D3. As in "diesel." But the Alpina D3 isn't your mom's Jetta TDI wagon. It has 350 horsepower and a staggering 516 pound-feet of torque at just 1,500 RPM. And in addition to being more economical, it's an Alpina, so it's more luxurious and adept in the corners than your average 3-Series sedan.

It's a tough call to make. The D3 won't have the visceral performance of the M3, nor its legendary name, but it could be the better all-arounder. Real shame we can't get it in the U.S.
