This is a rumor and boy oh boy is it a doozy. Apparently some of our mates Down Under have heard that the Volkswagen Group is considering changing it's name to Auto Union. Wait, what?
For those that don't know, Auto Union is the name of the group of German automakers that was formed by the merger of Audi, Horch, DKW, and Wanderer just before World War II.
But that brand has long been defunct. So why would VW consider changing its name? Well, maybe it's because, as VW Vortex notes, Volkswagen has a ton of brands under its umbrella from Bugatti to Skoda and Ducati to Bugatti. They comprise everything.
For now, we're going to treat this as a rumor. Why would VW trade in its own name recognition for a new name? That just isn't clear. Nor does it make any sense whatsoever.
