The Mazda RX-7 Was An 'Organic Sensation' In 1992

The Mazda RX-7 and Mistubishi 3000GT were high-tech wunderkinds back in 1992, fit only for the "trend-setting urban nightclubbist," but nowadays they're more fondly recalled as properly quick little coupes, even if that does mean clean examples are hard to find.

So it's not surprising at all that back then, Jeremy Clarkson labeled both of them as "great fun."

But what is surprising, if you haven't watched much of the old version of Top Gear, and you're more used to the relatively glitzy modern incarnation, what with all its bells and whistles, is how back-to-basics this clip is. There are static shots of each engine, and Jeremy Clarkson goes on about small technical bits, and how each feels when driving through the countryside.

It's actually a kind of refreshing contrast to the big-smoke powerslides that dominate episodes today. Not that there's anything wrong with screeching tires and the smell of rubber, but hey, sometimes you just want know what an old Mitsubishi is like to drive.
