Some terribly sad news has emerged in Europe for anyone who is a fan of gorgeous Fiats, Alfa Romeos, Lamborghinis and other lustworthy sporting cars: design house Bertone is headed to bankruptcy.

The UK's Telegraph reports that the famed Italian company confirmed it will enter bankruptcy proceedings due to mounting debts that have prevented the staff from working for more than a month and a half.

By the end of April, a bankruptcy court will decide if Bertone will close for good or if it can be bought by another company. There have been several proposals so far from foreign suitors, including one from Turkey, the newspaper reports.

It's a real shame to hear this about Bertone. Over the years they have designed some of the most beautiful, avant garde and noteworthy cars ever to hit the pavement, including the Lamborghini Miura, the Lamborghini Countach, the Lancia Stratos pictured up top, and too many Fiats and Alfas to count. In 2012 the firm celebrated its 100th birthday as well.

We'll see what happens to Bertone next month. I really hope they find a way to stay open and continue doing their thing.
