Bob Lutz on Global Warming: "Total Crock of Shit"

Agree or disagree with the sentiments of GM's product czar Bob Lutz, you have to respect him for his frankness. In our experience, it's fairly easy to identify a total crock of shit like global warming once you take into consideration the complex interactions of geophysics, global weather patterns and complex high atmosphere chemistry involved in climate change, which Lutz surely has. We're not here to make a statement on the science of climate change, and if Lutz wants to sell us shitboxes like the Cobalt and giant SUV's with mild hybrid systems stuffed into them all while flying his fighter jet around for shits and giggles we're fine with that. But then again, if the Vice Chairman of Global Product Development thinks this about climate change, it kind of makes a lot of GM's latest marketing a total crock of shit, too. [via D Magazine]

  • Seat belts were also a crock of shit. Keep fighting the good fight, GM.

  • Well done, Bob! You might want to put some pressure on that foot, elevate it above your chest, and make sure the bleeding slows down before trying to put it any lower to avoid any severe blood loss. We're going to have to go after that bullet, though. And it's gonna hurt.

  • After the Volt's 40 mile range claimed in that dog ad I just want GM to go away. In 8 years of technical innovation GM has managed to halve the range of an electric car.

  • Riight....the satellite imagery of the icecap melting from 1998 to 2008 is a crock of shit, too.

Bob, give us more stupid useless vehicles that get 10mpgs please!

  • "GM Announces Findings about global warming, says its proven that its a Crock of Shit."

GM has included an excerpt from the GM press release. "I done gon drove this here Yuk-on and this here new Cum-aro fer a whol day, and the planet ain't under water! Hot dam, thar ain't no globl warmin'! Its a total Crock of Shit!"

  • This one line explains it all:

"the ex-Marine said at a private lunch in Arlington today."

  • Lutz is a crock of shit. Dude doesn't miss a chance to demonstrate it.

The best part of the article was the part where he claims the need to divest ourselves of foreign oil is reason enough for the Volt. Which is ridiculous because even a 100MPG car wouldn't change that.

When GM goes down, Lutz will be the most culpable, moreso even than Wagoner.

  • Whatever. This isn't big news. It'll dissappear in a day.

He's old anyway. Christ, he thinks the Malibu is going to change everything in the mid-size segment.

  • This is why I will never take GM seriously, well, that and their lack of appealing products. The biggest crock of shit here is the one Mr. Lutz is stirring.

  • No credit given for this statement, I see: "I'm a skeptic, not a denier. Having said that, my opinion doesn't matter."

He's making what the market wants, not saving the whales. He's a businessman, not Greenpeace.

  • Global warming is caused by cheeseburgers, not suvs.
    The Science channel said so.

  • @arowsell: And add in the ability to recharge itself on gas ifits range is exceeded. That would make the Volt (if produced) a suitable car to have as an only car, which the EV1 never could have been.

  • right, i bet anything this a-hole isn't buying seafront property soon either way.

you know what is a crock of shit bob? gm cars. ha!

wisdom dispensed by a guy whose company lost 38 BILLION dollars last year.

  • @harumph: $37.3 Billion of which was an accounting adjustment for unused tax credits rather than an actual loss.

  • @JHJVJR: I noticed that too, but it's just too gosh-darned easy to bash fat, stupid Americans and their fat, stupid cars built by a fat, stupid company than giving the article any rational thought.

GM IZ DUM! LUTZ IS A BIG REDNEKC!!11

  • @JHJVJR:
If he was really making what the market wants, wouldn't GM be making money?

  • You know what inevitably turns to a total crock of shit? Every thread regarding CAFE or global warming.

There should be an easy formula for these threads:

    1. Post made by Jalopnik about CAFE or global warming. Criticize GM whether or not they were involved in the actual story or not. Let the German car companies that ignore CAFE and pay the fines off the hook 100%. At least 1 in 4 of these posts must contain at least subtle Bush-bashing or Republican-bashing. [For the record, this post did avoid any political undertones, despite making the author's thoughts very clear on the subject.] Try to pass some of this political crap off as snarky humor.

    2. Comments are made bashing GM, again regardless of their involvement in the story. Many comments are posted by those that drive RWD foreign cars that aren't helping anyone's CAFE standard or carbon footprint. Some of the most snarky comments are made by posters who drive German makes that ignore CAFE. Someone chimes in about Honda and that FWD isn't bad.

    3. Comments are posted about GM build quality, almost all of which are based on cars that GM no longer produces.

    4. "Bob Lutz is old" humor.

    5. Bitching about GM possibly going to FWD and less power, all the while ignoring the fact that the car they drive is made by a company that is basically all FWD (Honda) or ignores CAFE (Germans).

  • Why make all the effort for "green" cars then? Screw the hybrids, screw the Volt, and screw the Hywire, as they amount to nothing, since global warming doesn't matter anyways. Just keep making those E85 cars to reduce our dependence on foreign oil; that's working isn't it? But that's not what the marketing department is saying. Didn't they recently release a crap load of commercials touting GM's greenness?

  • Wow . . . This from the guy who said they wouldn't build the Caddy 16 because it seemed "irresponsible". At this point, building lousy cars is irresponsible.

Having a Buick division (without a GNX) is irresponsible. Honestly, having Pontiac is irresponsible. Why don't we have an Impala yet? Why is the G6 aging like a meth addict? Why does GM have 64.5 different combinations of hybrid-flex fuel-Lambda cross-over bumble boxes?

  • @Bancho: They rode record profits during the SUV boom by making what the market wanted. They were slow to adapt to the small car trend, and got left behind. Lutz is saying they are trying to rectify that by marketing eco-friendly vehicles, he believes are shit, but are what the market wants right now.

  • Exactly who would listen to the idiot in charge of a sinking ship... wait... he probably doesn't think GM is doing too bad either... nevermind. Thanks Bob, you can go back to your cave and fire more Americans in favor of Chinese and Korean outsourcing.

  • @stopcrazypp: He addressed that in the article.

Lutz: "Having said that, my opinion doesn't matter."

Lutz basically said he thinks green is horseshit, but the market wants it, so they're going to make it and tout it.

  • @JHJVJR:

    +1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.04

  • @coaster.n3rd: I think you're responding to my post about the CAFE/global warming formula. If so, muchas gracias.

  • @JHJVJR:

Seriously though. Your argument falls on deaf ears here 98% of the time.

  • @JHJVJR: I see you have everyone all figured out. Good to know we're all in the 'jumping to conclusions' bandwagon together, welcome.

  • @JHJVJR: Yeah, I read later that's actually a hybrid even though they call it an electric car. Still though they made the EV go 100 miles why not the Volt? Had they kept that car program what sort of range would they have by now? So we're supposed to be impressed that GM's playing catch up to the Japanese now?

@bzr: I'd wager my home town is more redneck than anywhere you've ever been. This anti-GM hate is coming from a guy who used to be a die hard Chevy guy. Lutz isn't a redneck, he's a fucking dinosaur working for a dinosaur of a company.

  • @CARBOMB: Did I say I had individuals figured out? I didn't mean to. I meant to say I can predict the format of these posts correctly pretty much every time. If you look at old posts, they follow that format.

I didn't jump to any conclusions. If you mean I jumped to conclusions about what posters drive, I'm basing it on statements people make on this site about what they drive or what a "good" car is.

  • @arowsell: "Catch up tothe Japanese".

The Japanese have nothing like this in the pipeline. In fact, they say the technology is impossible/stupid.

If it happens, the Volt would leapfrog plug-in Hybrids like the next gen Prius and the Saturn PHEV that comes out the same year as the new Prius.

  • We've been experiencing global temperature fluctuations since the beginning of time, and that includes the time before internal combustion engines roamed the planet. If what Bob meant was, "The theory that the current global warming trend is influenced by human activity is a total crock of sh!t," then pat the man on the back.

  • BOB LUTZ WAS RIGHT.. I think most of you on here are a bunch of foreign car loving elitest snobs. So it's only logical that you would have to defend the biggest fraud perpetrated on mankind -- global warming. Because it makes you feel good about yourself. Why is it that Toyota is God when they make the Prius but GM is attempting to make a hybrid and all you want to do is tear them down. I think that this is all a crock of shit..

  • @JHJVJR:

I agree 100%. The trouble is they're so slow to respond to changes. They're just now bringing over a halfway decent compact in the form of the Astra.

I wish GM well, I just wish they put as much effort into their cars as they do their trucks.

  • Bob Lutz has far more credibility than Al Gore.

  • @smokeydog001: I don't know. Bob Lutz has two degrees from UC Berkeley and was born in Switzerland. He sounds pretty liberal to me.

  • Jesus Christ, when are they going to fire this man?

  • THUNDER - You got that right! Global warming may be happening but we, humans, could not possibly know the cause. Even if we had had the technology to measure the earth's temperature since we inhabited the planet, we still wouldn't have enough data to make an intelligent assessment of climate change. We've been here for less that 1/10 of 1% of the earth's history.

  • Global warming is a crock of shit, and monkeys will fly out of my butt.

I suppose it helps that I have a keg of beer from one of NY's top home brewers on my front stoop, but still, Lutz is so full of shit, that he's got diarrhea for fingers (thanks to Grandpa Jourgensen and beer).

Seriously, though, that's a severe case of denial. The poor bastard needs to stop drinking Robitussin DM with breakfast (from what I can tell, that's all there is to do in Michigan), and wake up to reality.

  • Image of graverobber- Same great taste, new low price! graverobber- Same... at 07:37 PM on 02/12/08 *

BREAKING NEWS: Robert Lutz declares stars to be nothing more than pinholes punched in black-painted cardboard about 30 feet up. I think his statement has about the same credibility as the Tobacco execs touting the healthful aspects of cigarettes.

  • People like Bob Lutz up in the helm of GM puts purchasing a GM vehicle squarely in the unethical bracket for me.

  • Am i the only one who thinks if we buy american, it t will help get us through these tough times? Hey i like foreign cars but it dont improve our products here or jobs or our economy.

  • seriously, we need to be building cars that have MUCH MUCH MUCH WORSE MPG!!!! wtf, go back to Russia!

George W. Bush is a SAINT and is the greatest President of ALL TIME. Anyone who "bashes" him is a commie pinko red bastard.

global warming IS a crock. no one has proven anything. it is FRICKIN FREEZING here today! Today, the globe NEEDS warming! i'm going out to idle my 4 SUVs for a little while. I can't afford these oil prices to heat my home!

  • @estern: Not to get into this debate, but just to mention that we can accurately know the temperature/CO2 going back about half a million years and have a pretty good idea of C02 emissions going back 600 million years. That's the science, at least.

  • @thunder: Yes, the climate has gone thru changes due to strong natural factors, like multiple volcano eruptions, meteorites and especially this: increase and decrease of solar activity. But this time around there is apparently no change in solar activity, nor have we had any meteor impacts or influences, nor have we had disastrous vulcano eruptions.

We do however produce enormous amounts of CO2; traffic, factories and agriculture... Now this wasn't such a problem in the past, but because we are overpopulating this planet, the problem is growing and will suffocate us if we don't change.

And even if the whole climate thing was a hoax... oil IS running out and we need another energy source.
And new technologies are exiting.. the gas engine has been around for 100 years and is starting to look old.. I share the nostalgic feelings and love anything with a gas engine, but why not try something new?

  • idling... idling... idling... idling...

why can't G.W.Bush run again? 4 more years! these have been the greatest 8 years in American history, BAR NONE!!!!

  • Bob isn't doing GM any justice with his remarks. Frankly I think it's unprofessional and reckless. So as far as typical GM bashing, yeah, I'd say it's warranted. He's also telling you straight up he doesn't believe in what he's making, but he's making it for the money anyhow. Cars are no different than any other craft. If you don't like what you do you're going to suck at it.

  • A little history: [www.youtube.com]

If you think there is significant doubt among the people doing actual work in the field, you have been taken for a ride.

This has nothing to do with GM or muscle cars or liberal vs. conservative. The data is overwhelming. Lutz might call himself a skeptic but he what he is showing is willful ignorance or denialism.

To think that the AAAS, NAS, IPCC, and just about everyone publishing in peer reviewed journals are engaged in some bizarre conspiracy of deception is ridiculous.

  • @wyatt_1st: giving money to an American company could help improve the American economy? that's crazy talk right there...

and Lutz, if global warming is really bullshit, please put the Cadillac Sixteen, Pontiac Firebird, and Chevy versions of the Pontiac G8 into production...
