Detroit Auto Show: 2009 Mercedes GLK Vision Freeside Unveiling Extravaganza

We've already showed you Mercedes' new mouthful, the 2009 GLK Vison Freestyle 320 CTDi Bluetech Concept. But tonight, Mercedes officially unveiled it at big band extravaganza at MOCAD.

Due to the extravagance of the event, we couldn't help but feel that we were experiencing something akin to the last days of the Roman Empire. While a 1920's influenced German brass band played Britney Spears covers, Kim Catrall made a cameo appearance, we drank moderately-priced champagne and Dr. Z delivered a partially incomprehensible accounting of Mercedes' accounts.

We don't really understand where the GLK fits into all of this and weren't totally impressed. It looks like a busy, fussy X3 with really cool, optional, roof rack mounted LED lights — basically the 2009 version of KC smiley faces.

The one saving grace was the wheels. Which actually delivered on the classy, art deco feel Mercedes were trying to go for with the whole thing.

Fugly and pointless. I promise you, 50 years from now this won't be in anyone's fantasy garage--hell, in 5 years no one will remember this completely forgettable piece of excess.

  • Wow wow wee that's pretty suckey. Looks like the Mercedes Forester but uglier. Come on Benz; show us what you've got!

oh and yea the wheels and the screens are semi decent

  • man for the first time a Benz screams CHEAP
It looks like a friggin Ford for crying out loud..
I thought the new C class was going to be decent and then I saw one at a parking lot and that car screamed cheap from the poor panel gaps and the hodge podge styling..now we get this thing with cladding glued on and it its supposed to exude luxury??? Somewhere a Silver Arrow is weeping

someone photoshop a Ford badge on this and you will see an Explorer if you slap a KIA a grown up Sportage

  • Damn, that looks like a fucking Ford.
They can't even do rims right.

  • The Koreans are laughing now that Mercedes is copying old Ssanygongs? It looks like a Chinese copy of a Mercedes.

  • @Galaxie500:
The Chinese own Ssangyong now :( So now it's Chinorean or Korinese? I bet the next Ssangyong Chairman looks better than what MB is putting out.

  • I wish I could ignore these pieces of crap but people buy them and then I have to sit behind them in traffic, wishing fruitlessly they'd just disappear into some giant sinkhole that only swallowed useless SUVs.

  • I really wish manufacturers would give up on this trend of showing blinged-up 'concept' versions of actual production cars, especially when we all know that the production version is ready thanks to the spy photographers.

I don't think the production version looks bad, but this thing is pretty horrible. However, I did read somewhere that this wouldn't be coming to the UK, so I don't really need to be concerned about it.

Apparently it wouldn't be profitable to convert it to right-hand drive based on the projected sales. I find that laughable given that it's got to be substantially cheaper than the GL, which we do get, but that's modern Britain for you.

  • It's ugly, but the name is awful.

  • Yuk!!! Looks like a Korean version of Toyata Freelander! Ford messed up there own, now they are going for the Germans.

  • This should be name Mercedes GLK outofcontrol! Design inspiration from late 1980's Boombox!

  • zzzzzzzz

  • I'm with Novaload & Benson; the first word in my head, before I even scrolled to comments, was "fugly." The second was "Forester." But worst of all, most unforgiveably, (and also baffling about your review) are those hideous hip-hop pimpmobile look-at-me bling-bling attention-whore wheels. If you gave me a free GLK, I'd drive it, but only after selling those embarrassing wheels to some aspiring gangster for enough to buy a nice motorcycle.

  • such odd proportions.. way high roof and low hood.. just looks bad

  • Has anyone noticed that the wheels on the white one....................look exactly like the wheels on the new Honda Accord???
