So we were all teased with the Mazda Furai teaser photo a few weeks back — that's the concept car we'll be seeing from the brand all about the "Zoom-Zoom" in two weeks at the Detroit Auto Show. Now we can be teased with the full press shots thanks to Automobile letting the cat out of the bag a wee bit early (and thanks to Edmunds dropping the veil completely). So take a gander at the press shots below and hit the jump to again find out what we know about this concept car cum Courage C65 chassis.
"Furai takes Mazda's unique Nagare (Japanese for "flow") design language a step further as it is translated into a concept car based on an American Le Mans Series (ALMS) racing car. The car utilizes the Courage C65 chassis the company campaigned in the ALMS series only two seasons ago, and the 450-hp three-rotor rotary engine that distinguishes it from anything else on the track."

DO WANT
F1 meet Art-Nouveau
That. Looks. Fast.
Good thing I'm wearing a wet suit.
effing awesome.
Good lord. I think this concept encapsulates just about everything I love about sports cars. Seriously, this thing is the Platonic "Form of Sports Car".
Oh this looks hot.
+5 racing twostrokes.
i think i am in love.
@rondeimer: Well said!
Dayum. Are they sure that thing ain't alive? I like how it seems to be smiling in the sunshine.
Zoom Zoom, Hoon.
I want one of these monstrosities.
Intersting. Wait, @Gamble...why are you wearing a wetsuit?
@gamble: Very Funny...
The elements apply to all things: air (cirrus clouds), water (manta ray), earth (it looks like it sticks to it real well), fire (lots of that going on in the triple rotor engine) and wood (I have it).
@greenvan: don't let the rotorheads hear you call the 20B a 2 stroke, they'll get their panties in a bunch.
(I love the rotary, and i'm damn glad to see Mazda put a 3 rotor in this new concept.. maybe the Zoom-Zoom is making a comeback)
The Mazda Furai has so many curves like a woman's body, Sandy Wong would not know where to begin humping.
if they decided to put that out on the track with other cars, people might actually care and remember that Mazda actually races in the ALMS...
Who cares how aerodynamic that thing actually is, they need to race it just to put the other cars to shame. It's like a piece of art on wheels.
It's a shame they decided to Kumho's on it. "Flipper" comes to mind too...
Irregardless it is beautiful.
Such an organic flow of body curves. I picture it with a lacy-winged dragonfly hood-ornament or grill-badge, and perhaps an interior dome light by Tiffany in cut colored glass and lead channeling...
It's like an organic-mecha-gundam version of the 787B. You can see the 787B's lines in the form of the car, but updated, modernized, transformed and stylized. It's one of the boldest concepts I've ever seen. And it works.
So Batman drives a Mazda now, huh. Neat.
ive been waiting for a something more than a twin rotary to come out of mazda for a long time. and this is definitely a good way to go about it.
Wow... good thing I've mastered typing with only my left hand. Dunno what else to say, it looks incredible and I bet it's all sorts of crazy fun.
Unless these concept cars have ANY sort, and I do mean ANY sort of impact on their road cars in the next 3-5 years, who cares?
I love the concept, looks great, powerful, all that. I'll eat my tires if they put anything seriously resembling this in either for or capability on the road in the next few years.
I'm sick of beautiful concepts that have nothing to do with a company's other cars. Props to BMW about their new car coming up that is going from concept to production car with much the same look(the CS or something I think it's called).
Hope they sprayed it with a coat of dragon-repellent clear coat....damn...
OMFG!!!!Awesome!!!!!!11
i can think of a few rotors i'd like this thing to turn.....
WTF did that mean?
umm.. yeah.. i love me some wankles and the renesis is the next best thing.
GO KICK SOME ASS! (i don't care that you report to a certain 'f-bomb' of a parent company... do it to it!)
Am I the only one who thinks Horacio Pagani may raise an eyebrow at this design? I mean, it's better executed than the Zonda, but I see a lot of similarity. The "styled" air intakes are odd, but the stance is great and it's a very nice concept car.
Dang! It looks almost identical to the new Lotus design for Hot Wheels. Paint it orange, and you'd swear to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Ayrton Senna: Yeah, it looks like you are. The Zonda looks like a bony runt beside this thing. Just look at the curves. Look at that haunch--this car has an honest to god haunch. Much more living form, less robotic/mechanical looking.
hell yeah all the Nagare wave stuff is coming into something thats mighty tasty
wow I was not expecting this
I like to hope that the above racing vehicle will be homogenated, and that there will be a production version of that exact car, sans racing wing, higher ground clearence, etc.
Mazda supercars? Heck yes, if they're gonna look like that.
I looks like a dragon to me ;)
I want to flog the hell out of that thing and then cuddle with it.
very spoon-able.
That is one of the most beautiful designs to come from Mazda..... I hope some of this design language, translates to the rx-7. Its got to be a fastback hatch - with ample room for random cargo, and little regard for the headroom for people in the rear - if you want to ride in the back hunch over and deal with it.
Fucking beautiful.
Hoontastic.
The Japanese side of the Amerigasm has spoken. And she is fine. Fi-i-i-i-ine.
It could also feasibly be a "green" car, as Mazda delivers RX-8s fueled by hydrogen.
Needs moon rims. Then its done.
Far cry from the Miata (or whatever they try to call it now).
That car just does not look like a Mazda. I am so surprised they made something that looks this different and good. With it being a concept car that different and bold for a company, I wonder if it will ever come out...
@CBR2200:you sick disgusting little man
@tolldog:They said it is based off of an ALMS racing car.
@daegon: Hydrogen RX8's a bi-fueled, can take e85 and regular gasoline too. Actually... that makes them tri-fueled. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!
Looks like a Hot Wheels car!
That should be the Mazda LMP1 car. I want 5 of them!
This reminds me why I'll always have a Mazda in the driveway/garage. Always.
Dragons do not have sex with these cars. These cars have sex with dragons.
Wow... i've wet myself @.@
Mazda has truly gone psychotic. Can we get some of this please?
This car makes a teardrop aerodynamic shape beautiful and properly proportioned. I can't help but hope people see and copy this endlessly
"Homogenated" would make it into a dairy product. We'd probably like it to be homologated...
It's like a real life hotwheels car, and I like it.
Besides all the gorgeous, anyone else think it might have issues with front downforce?
If it were my sister, I would marry it.
Did they run out of creative ideas towards the back of the car? What happened to the rear wing? Doesn't fit the whole design theme.
No Zoom Zoom for you.....
Girl in bar: So what kind of car do you drive?
You: Oh, I just got a new Fuari.
Girl: Wow, a Ferrari?
You: No, a Fuari, its like a Ferrari, but Japanese.
Girl: Huh?
You: Mazda makes it, its really cool though.
Girl: Oh ok... listen my friend is calling me, have fun.
i can haz a furai bush ?
That looks organic, which is cool!
@yellofury:
Me neither. I've actually found most of the Nagare concepts thus far to be a little off-putting.
But, this...this is different. If they can put out a new RX-7 that looks like this, and with a three-rotor, then to hell with paying down my student loans, I want one.
These flowing concepts have done nothing for me... until now! This...this...this is something...uhh...this is not bangle!
This is as cool as the 1968 Ferrari 250P5 concept, which means 'Extremely hoonerific, I want one immediately, money be damned!'

@FLB: [www.conceptcarz.com]
Interesting that Mazda would reveal this now. I know the ACO wants closed top coupes that resemble road cars for the LMP 1 and 2 classes by 2009 or 2010. The side of this thing reminds me of the recent RX-7 concepts. Hmmm.....
I like it, short overhangs look good, I really like the melding of organic curves with the mechanical function of the car. For some reason I am getting a bit of an Evangelion vibe to it, but that might just be me. Pity this could never be a competitive racer, those short overhangs that help it look so good would probably mean poor downforce, front and rear.
@POLAR: Wong wouldn't even make it to the car, just love explosions in the pants.
@gamble: Juicy!
There is not a snowballs chance in hell this will ever be offered to the public. Ford already experienced a profit sucking supercar (the Ford GT) and they will not be giving the green light to produce this thing. Sorry to take the wind out of your sails, but lets get real.
