John Buffum is the most successful American rally driver ever, racing everything from factory Triumph TR7s to Group B Audi Quattros. Here he is trying a handbrake turn for the first time and, well, his reaction is just like all of ours.

This is at the extraordinary and under-appreciated Rallye Auto Charlevoix, a Canadian event that used to cut straight through the closed off streets of a picturesque Quebecois town, Clermont.

This was actually the 1999 running of the event, the last time it was on tarmac.

Listen to the codriver laugh, β€œit worked!” Buffum responds gleefully, still at full tilt through the trees β€œI’ve never tried that before!”

I know that feeling, John. We all do.
