When You Do A Handbrake Turn For The First Time

John Buffum is the most successful American rally driver ever, racing everything from factory Triumph TR7s to Group B Audi Quattros. Here he is trying a handbrake turn for the first time and, well, his reaction is just like all of ours.

This is at the extraordinary and under-appreciated Rallye Auto Charlevoix, a Canadian event that used to cut straight through the closed off streets of a picturesque Quebecois town, Clermont.

This was actually the 1999 running of the event, the last time it was on tarmac.

Listen to the codriver laugh, “it worked!” Buffum responds gleefully, still at full tilt through the trees “I’ve never tried that before!”

I know that feeling, John. We all do.
