Once upon a time, car designers created special styling cues that endured as car models evolved. Even today, designers recall those cues in modern versions of enduring models, while creating new elements they hope will last. What's the most iconic car-design element?

I can't imagine a Chevrolet Corvette without four round taillights, two on each side. History doesn't recall whether it was design boss Bill Mitchell or his hot-rodding upstart Larry Shinoda who first drew the four round tail lights on a Corvette, but whoever it was, it stuck. Will the C7 Corvette finally release the car's design from the 50-year tyranny of round tail lamps? We will soon see.
