What Was The Most Exciting Race Ever?

What's the one, the one you couldn't take your eyes off of, or the one you wish you could have attended?

It's been lamented again and again that modern Formula 1 is "too boring." That there's not enough overtaking, not enough drama, not enough excitement. Or, if you're a Nascar fan, not enough crashing. It's one of detractor's favorite memes for why F1 should stay out of the US, which ignores just how many different drivers have won this year.

Arguing which series is more exciting is a foolish exercise, even for us. Arguing which race was the most exciting, however, is exactly as foolish an exercise as we'd undertake.

For me, the most exciting race I've ever seen was the 1999 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. While this has a lot to do with my being old enough to remember it, it was also a massive battle between four major manufacturers for the checkered flag. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, and Audi were all vying for the top spot. It saw the famous flight of the CLR and subsequent withdrawal of the Mercedes teams, and was the precursor to Audi's coming endurance racing dominance. It didn't hurt that I had some Matchbox Panoz's with which I could recreate the action I was watching on my basement carpet.

Le Mans is exciting every year, even if it's not the most exciting track on earth. Can you think of something that could top '99 as the most exciting race of all time?
