You can buy a brand new diesel Range Rover in the U.S. right now, which is fun because the diesel makes it feel like a work truck and the rest of it, well, the rest of it feels like Bruce Wayne’s city penthouse.
And like Bruce Wayne, there’s a mysterious and powerful darkness hidden just under the surface with the 254 horsepower, 443 lb-ft of torque from the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6.
I have it until Monday. What do you want to know about it?
DISCUSSION
I own a 2017 TDV6 diesel Discovery HSE and have put a little over 14,000 miles on it in the last year. My opinion is that it is a great vehicle and anyone who doesn’t at least test drive the diesel is doing themselves a serious disservice. Here are some impressions from the last 14 months:
Engine is remarkably quiet - especially at highway speeds - absolutely silent at 70 mph.
A very slight hesitation is noticed just coming off idle - once the tach hits 1200 RPM stuff starts to happen in a hurry.
Around town mileage is averaging 20-21 mpg, 400 miles per tank
Highway mileage is an easy 30 mpg - easily over 550 miles per tank.
Towing a 23' long wooden boat - combined weight of boat and trailer around 2900 lbs - 23.5 mpg over 350 miles from Atlanta to Beaufort, SC.
Recent 2500 mile round trip to upstate New York which included a mix of roads - including over 50 miles of dirt roads - 27.5 mpg
Best fuel mileage recorded so far on a single tank - 31.5 mpg running with cruise set at 64 mph on I-81 in Pennsylvania (heavy state police presence)
Its comfortable quiet, powerful and tows like a beast. Whats not to like?
