Watch A Bunch Of Fast SUVs Drag Race

It is absolutely mind-boggling that a super SUV that can run the quarter mile in 12.9 seconds is considered the slow one. It wasn’t long ago that some of the best sports cars on the market struggled to hit 12-second quarters. That’s exactly what happens in this video from CarWow, however, as the Land Rover Range SVR is the slowest of the four.

Mercedes has a new G-klasse 63 AMG to battle with, and Lamborghini’s new Urus is incredibly quick. Both make use of twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engines. The AMG’s 5.5-liter makes 577 horsepower, while the Lambo’s 4-liter makes 641 ponies. The Tesla Model X P100D is a known quantity. It’s quick, and it launches like a maniac. Can the internal combustion crowd take the crown? You already know the answer, don’t you?

Throw a quartet of five-thousand-pound brawlers into the ring and see which one comes out swinging. Click play on the video below, and enjoy a few minutes of instant acceleration.

Can’t help but wonder how a Jeep Trackhawk might have done in this company.

*Spoiler alert*

The irony of Tesla beating the others is that it makes these races almost completely meaningless.

Supercars command their prices primarily because of their 1/4 mile and 0–62 mph times—it’s what makes for good marketing—but if an EV costing tens of thousands less can beat you handily, what’s the point? All supercars will be left to compete on exterior and interior styling and software/connectivity, which are much more subjective and difficult to compare from a marketing perspective (and the auto industry has already overused hyperboles). For hypercars like Pagani and Bugatti, they can at least lean heavily on handmade craftsmanship for exclusivity.

Not too long from now, acceleration times won’t be the biggest selling point of super cars anymore, but it’ll be very interesting to see how they survive in that new world.
