Volkswagen Corrado SLC: Early 1990s 'Bahn Burner

Volkswagen's Corrado, released in 1989 as a replacement for the aging Scirocco, was the right car at the wrong time; a hatchback that started getting hot just as performance cars were being re-imagined as four-door sport sedans. Despite a bump in performance in 1992, in the form of the VR6-powered SLC version that could outaccelerate a Porsche 944, the car's sales plummeted, ending in 1994 at 2,111 cars sold, down from over 5,600 in 1990. Still, the Corrado has a devoted following that wouldn't drive anything else. And why should they? [PS: Sorry about the misspelling of "Scirocco" that sat live for a couple of days. I had fixed it, but the server spit it out like a bad blutwurst. Our apologies.]
