Turns Out The 2018 Jeep Wrangler Won't Get A Wacky 368 HP Turbo Four After All

Slow your roll on that 368 horsepower rating for the new 2018 Jeep Wrangler’s 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles rescinded that figure in the information it filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reports Automotive News. The engine’s horsepower is merely listed as “NR” (for “not rated”) in the refiled version of that paperwork.

That makes just a little more sense, as 368 HP is near the high end of what a turbo inline four usually produces in any automaker’s stock trim, even more so than something like the Mercedes CLA45 AMG.

I mean, you’re almost getting into World Rally Championship car territory there—and those are engines that just have to last long enough to finish races, not so much for years and years of muddy consumer abuse.

Automotive News notes that it would be “counterintuitive” to have such a high-powered four-pot in a big Lego brick like the Wrangler, the previous version of which did well enough with just 285 hp from a 3.6-liter V6.

The power output of Jeep’s new “Hurricane” turbo I4 engine for the 2018 Wrangler remains a mystery, then. The early reports of around 300 horsepower from its four-cylinder engine sound way more realistic.
