Back in the heady days of late last century, Toyota built a concept version of its Celica, called the Celica Cruising Deck. It was simply a Celica with a sun deck in the rear, on which bored, borderline anorexic models could strap themselves in and casually glance to the side as cameramen leered from above. It was a masterstroke. The following half-decade saw every carmaker from Pontiac to Peugeot scrambling to build its own version of the "model seat." Finally, Chrysler built a sedan with an entire tiki bar, on which a striking Polynesian barmaid would serve rum drinks and laugh her infectious laugh long into the cool, South Pacific evenings. Or maybe we just dreamt that.
