Holy insert clever auto auction pun here, Batman! The original Batmobile from the 1960s TV series was sold tonight at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction for an insane $4.2 million.

But that high price tag is not entirely surprising. This car wasn't just any old Batmobile replica — this was the first one built by George Barris, a customized Lincoln Futura that had been on display in Hollywood since 1968, reports MSN. Some experts predicted it could have gone for as much as $5 million.

But while $4.2 million is a lot, it's not a record, according to Barrett-Jackson's Twitter feed. That's held by a Shelby Cobra that once sold for $5.5 million.

Would you have paid that much for the Batmobile? If you had one, what would you do with it?

I am disappointed. Someone bought a cartoon car for $4.2million. People are dropping hundreds of thousands of dollars on muscle cars left and right. A standard production Corvette (albeit vin 0001) went for over $1million for a design school. But a Presidential F150 auctioned for veterans struggled to make it to $300k.

I don't care if you're a lefty Democrat or a right-wing Republican, thats just disgraceful. There were plenty of people in that audience that had the money to push it way higher, and then could've written it off their taxes.

I know if I had the money I would've made sure it beat Jay's Fiat.
