This Tiny Ford Escort Wails to 9,000 RPM

Everyone is on a bit of a retro racing kick these days, so it’s fun to look back to the original footage shot when cars like the Ford Escort slid sideways with Cosworth BDAs howling up to 9,000 rpm.

I happened on this onboard from 1971, running at Jarama in Spain. Touring car driver John Fitzpatrick is at the wheel, and would be crowned European GT champion the next season after this. He knew how to wheel.

And that was, mostly, sideways, well past the limit of adhesion, while running that little twin-cam four cylinder to redline. Good stuff.

Ugh, this makes my heart hurt. I love high revving, small displacement engines and they’ve all but gone these days. I think the BRZ and the Miata now have the highest revving “small” displacement engines and I don’t even consider 7500RPM to be that high. You gotta clear at least 8K to give me the fizz.
