This gorgeous shot depicts nighttime AV-8B Harrier operations aboard the USS Essex LHD-2 while the ship churns through the seas somewhere in the vast Pacific. It's amazing that even though there may not be a person for thousands of miles in any direction, this extreme ballet of technology, ingenuity and courage can be occurring quite literally in the middle of nowhere.

Amazing that we can support 2 different carrier types ( this and the Nimitz) for 2 services, while every other country still hasn't got one decent one. France, maybe? But we helped them.

What other piece of technology could we be so advanced in that no one else can figure it out?

I always think of the Russian pilot who defected and visited a carrier one day. He was amazed at the operations that took place everyday.
