These Were The Lowest-Selling Cars In 2023
Despite a record sales year some models couldn't find enough buyers.
Last year was a record year for car sales. Everything kind of car, from the all electric new kids on the block and perennial favorites like pickup trucks saw gains. It wasn't all rosy for models, though. From the look of some of the sales numbers, there are cars that look to either be on their deathbeds, or about to be.
The following list of cars are the lowest selling models at their respective automakers. Some of the models you'll notice are already dead and gone, and the sales reflect the few stragglers left at the dealers.
Automakers not listed here either don't release individual sales info for the US or haven't released their info yet or don't look like they will release anything anytime soon.
Acura ILX
The ILX was killed off a couple of years ago when it was replaced by the Integra, But Acura still managed to sell sold five in 2023.
Alfa Romeo Giulia
You could honestly put the whole Alfa brand on this list; just under 11,000 were sold the whole year. While technically the worst seller was the Tonale at 2,096, it gets a pass since its an all new model. Aside from that, the Giulia was the worst selling Alfa in 2023 with just 3,461 sold.
Audi R8
Audi announced in late 2022 that the R8 would finally end production after the 2023 model year. Now that time has came and went we can finally see how the R8 sold its final year on the market; Audi sold 631 R8s in 2023, a 101 percent increase over 2022. Q4 R8 sales also saw 136 percent increase, going from 108 in 2022 to 255 in 2023.
BMW X2
The X2 was the worst selling BMW in 2023 which is strange. Only 191 were sold the whole year, a 92.8 percent drop over 2022. Just 15 were sold in Q4 2023. While this could have something to do with the new 2024 X2 hitting dealers at the same time, that would also mean that number should be higher since a new model is available to buyers.
Buick Encore
A favorite of grandparents and older in-laws the world over, the Buick Encore was discontinued for the 2023 model year. Buick decided it would rather just focus on selling the slightly smaller and sportier (?) Encore GX. Those leftover Encores made it the worse selling Buick in 2023. That's not saying much though as 5,887 managed to sell. Impressive for something that went out of production over a year ago.
Cadillac (Tie)
Cadillac is interesting because the worst selling model is essentially a tie between two different models: the CT4 and Lyriq EV. The Lyriq sold 9,154 in 2023 and 9,144 for the CT4, a difference of 10 units.
Chevrolet: Let Me Explain
Chevrolet is another automaker that has a weird situation. Looking at the brand's 2023 sales numbers, you'll see that the worst selling models are its commercial stuff since Chevy includes numbers for them with everything else: the Low Cab Forward (a badge job of the Isuzu NPR) and the Silverado Heavy Duty Chassis Cabs; each sold just a few hundred the whole year. However those are commercial vehicles, not really purchased by the buying public at large.
Excluding those, the worse selling Chevy in 2023 was the Camaro, with 31,028 sold.
Chrysler 300 (Technically)
When I say technically, it's because somehow, a handful of people out there keep finding Chrysler 200s to buy. This is a car that went out of production seven years ago, yet somehow four were sold. Same thing with the Town & Country van, which the Pacifica replaced years ago; two were sold. Excluding those low numbers, the worst selling Chrysler was the 300 with 13,169 sold.
Dodge (Same situation as Chrysler)
Dodge is in the same boat as Chrysler: a handful of old ass models that went out of production years ago keep finding handfuls of buyers. In Dodge's case, if you're going for the lowest selling, its the Viper (2 sold) followed by the Dart (3), Caravan (27) and the Journey (36). If you exclude those out of production models, the lowest selling Dodge in 2023 was the Hornet, though with 9,134 sold it gets a pass since its an all new model. That would then leave the Challenger as the worst selling model with 44,960 sold.
Everything Fiat Makes(Or Has Made)
It might not seem fair to include Fiat, since the whole brand is made up of exactly one model right now; the 500x. But the brand is in the same weird boat as its Stellantis brethren. Buyers went out and found discontinued models to buy brand new at a deep discount. If you include these models, the lowest selling Fiat in 2023 was the 500L which was axed in 202o. The 500L managed to move seven model three years after its demise.
The entire Fiat lineup, since they only sell the 500X, is astonishingly low at only 554 were sold the whole year, which is a 37 percent drop from 2022.
Ford EcoSport
Looking purely at the numbers, the lowest selling Ford in 2023 was the GT. But its a low production, six-figure supercar, so the 31 that sold in 2023 is understandable. Other than that, lowest selling Ford in 2023 was a discontinued model, the Ecosport. The Ecosport was discontinued for the 2022 model year, yet buyers still managed to purchase 2,508.
GMC Hummer EV
No surprise that the lowest selling GMC in 2023 was the Hummer EV with just 3,244 sold. The market for massive six figure EVs is only so big, especally with the markups that hit these things at the dealer.
Honda Passport
At Honda, its lowest selling vehicle in 2023 was the Passport with 43,502 sold. Buyers could be passing it up because its a strange offering. The Passport looks like a slightly smaller last gen Pilot. It weirdly has a starting price thats more than the Pilot as well. A 2023 Honda Pilot starts at (before destination) $37,090. A Passport? $41,900. Honda, make it make sense.
Hyundai (Toss Up)
Again with the discontinued vehicles. At Hyundai, the lowest selling vehicle is a toss up between two discontinued models and one that's only avilable in California. If you want to count cars not made anymore, the lowest selling Hyundai in 2023 was the Veloster with six sold, followed by the Accent with 31 sold. The Nexo hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, which is still in production, sold 241 in 2023.
Infiniti Q60
The great looking but underwhelming Q60 sports coupe was discontinued for the 2023 model year. But like most brands on this list, the folks who wanted them sought them out resulting in 1,060 sold in 2023. On a good note, Infiniti's overall sales actually increased almost 39 percent in 2023 with 64,699 total vehicles sold.
Jeep Grand Wagoneer
Excluding the one Jeep Patroit sold in 20223 (yes, 1), the lowest selling Jeep in 2023 was the big ol' Grand Wagoneer. 10,618 were sold the whole year.
Kia Stinger
Technically the lowest selling model at Kia is the EV9 with 1,118 sales. But like other new models it gets a pass. Of the old salt Kia models, the lowest selling Kia all year was the Stinger with 5,452 sales.
Lexus LC
My sweet beloved, the Lexus LC, was the lowest selling Lexus in 2023. Just 1,761 were sold all year. Why aren't you people buying these things?!
Lincoln Aviator
Surprisngly, Lincoln's second biggest SUV was its lowest seller in 2023. Lincoln only managed to sell 15,551 Aviator's in 2023.
Mini Cooper Clubman/ Clubman S
I guess some people don't like variety. The second largest Mini you can buy was the lowest selling in 2023. Mini moved just 2,735 the whole year.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
The most advanced Mitsubishi was the lowest selling in 2023. Mitsubishi sold just 6,681 Outlander plug-in hybrids the whole year.
Nissan (Toss Up)
Nissan had two low-selling models in 2023 but they come with excuses that are good enough to give them a pass. So technically, the GT-R was the lowest selling Nissan in 2023 with just 390 sold. But it's a six-figure sports car so its almost a given it will sell in such low numbers.
The second lowest was the Z with 1,771 sold in 2023. But the Z has been having sales trouble for over a year now. From problems with production and the chip shortage to markups, it all adds up and affects sales.
Ram ProMaster City
I had no idea that Ram even still made this thing. Ram sold 12,887 of this Italian in American work clothes.
Subaru BRZ
Subaru's odd man out, the BRZ, was it's lowest selling model in 2023. 4,188 BRZs found homes last year, an increase of 25.2 percent over 2022. Buy more BRZs people!
Tesla
Who knows honestly. I'm surprised Tesla even release figures. The company is weird in how it releases its production and delivery figures. They're in two groups: Model 3/Y and everything else. So we can't pin down exactly what sold the worst. Just know that Model S/X combined sold less than the 3/Y: 68,374 deliveries to 1,739,707.
Toyota (Toss Up)
In yet another instance of of discontinued models selling, Toyota had a few that sold in 2023. The lowest selling of these dead models was the Land Cruiser (which is on its way back with a new generation soon), which found seven buyers. Second lowest was the Avalon, which was axed a couple of years ago and replaced by the Crown. Fifty-five Avalons found buyers in '23. The CH-R was the third lowest with 777 buyers going for the dead small crossover.
Of models currently in production, the hydrogen fuel cell Mirai was the lowest selling Toyota model in 2023—2,737 found buyers, 85 more than the Supra, which is a little disturbing.
Volkswagen Arteon
Despite multiple reports the last few years of it's demise, the VW Arteon is still alive. VW managed to sell just 2,347 the whole year. Even though that number is low, its a 34.7 percent increase over 2022 so, cool, I guess? Even though it looks good the Arteon isn't the near luxury bargain it once was. Including destination, you'll have to drop $44,305 to get into a base Arteon. You might as well get an Audi at that point.
Volvo V90 Cross Country
A wagon this good looking doesn't deserve these sales figures. Sadly, the worst selling Volvo in 2023 was the V90 Cross Country. Only 577 were sold the whole year, and that's down four percent from 2022.
