These Are The Worst Convertibles Ever Made

I am a lover of all convertibles; I firmly believe that chopping the roof off of a car transforms it into something special. But not all convertibles are made equal, so earlier this week we asked you to share what you think are the worst convertibles ever made. Being the worst anything is quite a feat, but turning a car into a convertible is no small task, so if you’re a manufacturer seeing this and you feel hurt, just remember you did your best. Or at least we hope you did.

I even like most of the convertibles that y’all crucified on this list, but these are your answers for the worst convertibles ever made.

Please don’t make me explain why the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet needs to be at the top, or near the top of this list.

Chrysler Sebring Convertible

The Murano Cross-Cabriolet is the clear winner—no contest—but I’ll throw in the Chrysler Sebring convertible. Popular when they came out, and the object of desire for every dad who wanted to feel like hot shit but wasn’t quite ready for a Corvette. The Sebring convertible was pleated Dockers, braided leather belts, and Eastland boat shoes brought to life in car form. “Wait until the girls at the golf club’s snack shack see my new convertible. They’re going to think I’m sooo cool.

The Sebring ‘vert held up about as well as their over-mortgaged homes and “wine wives.”

I want to say Chrysler PT, but as I look at photos to add... I might be wrong. Is it the precursor to the Murano convertible, or a cheeky runabout?

I’m going to catch crap for this but, whatever. The Gallardo Spyder is cheap-looking. Top up, it looks like aftermarket hack job. Top down it looks like a cheap knock-off toy. I also can’t help but believe that they’re driven by insufferable, middle-age-crisis guys, with “more than Corvette” money.

The boomerest boomer mobile that every boomered. Retro styling of the early 00's, but with that added bubbliness of something that was swollen from a bee sting. Bad at being a truck, bad at being a car, bad at being a convertible.

Dodge 400, there were worse but this one is so bad it is hard to remember. My memory says something about this was the restart of American convertibles in 1982 after a 6?? years lack of American convertibles???

1992 Dodge Viper

1992 Dodge Viper

Gen 1 Viper Top Installation Instructions

Before the pitchforks start coming my way, let me explain...

It should have just been sold as a “Topless Car” or Spyder. The afterthought cloth top and plastic side windows is just terrible. Not to mention, there’s no external door handles, so if the top is in place properly and secured, you can’t open the door from the outside.

It also wasn’t the easiest thing to put together. So, Dodge had to make an instructional video for owners:

Triumph Stag

The Triumph Stag, which is actually a bad car that just happens to be a convertible.

The Stag was powered by a poorly designed 2.5L V-8 engine with multiple design flaws, including insufficient cooling for the American market. The Stag also suffered from poor overall build quality, among other issues.

Add to that, the top was a complicated hybrid of T-top, Targa and soft-top convertible, with side window frames that stayed in place when the windows were rolled down.

It’s an oldie, but I’ll offer the 1987 Cadillac Allante.

Sure it’s pretty, but with a MRSP of $54,700 ($148,507 in 2024 dollars) you’d at least expect a power top. I mean, Pontiac’s 1987 Sunfire SE Convertible had a power top and its MRSP was only $13,799.

Buick Cascada

Buick Cascada

A blue Buick Cascada parked with the top down on the beach
Photo: Buick

Before y’all go ahead and forget about this car, let me just help you remember the Buick Cascada: Objectively speaking it’s a handsome looking car. I happen to think it looks great whether or not the top is up or down. But if the main draw for the car was to attract potential Buick buyers to the dealer and drop their hard-earned money on a slightly less boring crossover, then the Cascada being a showroom piece already says all you need to know about it. I could forgive the car if they shipped it with at least the right amount of power to punt it here and there semi-briskly, but when you weigh in at 2 tons and all you get is 200 horsepower from a turbocharged I4, I wouldn’t be surprised if a sumo wrestler is running the quarter mile faster than you.

This is really just Sebring Pt. 2, but the fact that there was a sequel means someone didn’t learn from that mistake. So I really think this is worse.

Dodge Dakota Convertible

Dodge Dakota Convertible

My vote goes to the Dodge Dakota convertible: Just look at it... it’s stupid. And it was only offered a short time (1989-1991) because it flopped HARD in the market:

From AllPar: “In 1989, Dodge sold 2,842 Dakota convertibles, but that apparently saturated the market; just 909 were made in 1990 and eight in 1991, made to fulfill the contract with ASC. The convertibles came in 4x2 and 4x4 varieties, with standard five-speed manual transmission, fog lamps, padded rollbar, velour seats, power windows and locks, rear anti-lock brakes, full gauge package, 3.9 V-6, tilt wheel, and cruise control. Air conditioning and an automatic transmission were the only options.”

Plus, the Dakota Convertible engine sucked ass... the 3.9L V6 only made 125HP.
