Your forever car. The one car that you’d want to carry you through the ups and downs of a human live. It would have to be a special machine.

Last week, we posed this pondering question to our readers. Some answers were obvious. Others made us question whether we should keep liking cars. These were their responses.

This is the saddest question because the answer I have to give isn’t particularly fun, but probably a new F250 crew cab with 4wd and the short bed. It has all the technology I will ever need, it will allow me to do all of the projects that come up at my house/property, and while I will REALLY miss the fun of driving a good car, it will allow our family to do all of the other fun things...camping, going to the snow, towing a boat, carrying our bikes/surfboards, etc.

I need to go hug my e46 M3.

My Fiesta ST. It’s reasonably easy to work on, super fin to drive, good parts avilability, well documented repairs, large aftermarket support, did I mention it was fun, it’s practical, good on gas, parts are cheap. Literally my forever car. This little car has been too much fun for nearly a decade of ownership.

That being said, it’s getting retired as my daily this year and I will be buying a used GTI to beat on. The Fiesta is now my “race car” for summer fun only.

Realistically, the new Prius Prime. Fun enough for what you can do on public roads, lowest cost for the lifetime of the vehicle. Most likely would still be reasonably working for the rest of my life, and does everyday tasks well.

I already have it. A Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V. It’s great in all weather conditions, has four doors, manual transmission, pretty quick stock, handles beautifully, decent sized trunk, etc, etc, etc. Fortunately I don’t have to own only one car, so it’s my weekend/fun car.

A beige and white Toyota FJ40. I’m 53 years old. My wife and I live a very adventurous life. Our kids are grown and out of the house so we don’t need to haul kid stuff anymore. I don’t need to go fast, I just need to be able to go anywhere.

An FJ40 with the diesel motor will run until after I’m dead. The damn thing will go everywhere. I can get it fixed by anyone at anytime. As long as I can swap out the radio for an aftermarket head that runs Android Auto, this would be my drive-till-I-die vehicle.

Porsche 911

It has to be a modern 911, I’m not sure which model exactly (Turbo S? GT3 w/Touring Package? IDK). I have never owned a Porsche but have dreamed of owning one since I was a kid looking at car magazines.

I don’t care about reliability. I don’t care that it doesn’t have AWD and won’t get me up to the local ski area on bad days. I don’t care that it has no cargo capacity (yes, I know some weirdos put all sorts of racks and things on theirs, but not future me), I don’t care that my dog won’t fit (sorry, Dave). I don’t care how much insurance is. I don’t care about the gas mileage. I don’t care about maintenance costs.

I just want a 911.

Please?

years. I’d love to say an OG NSX or a Viper, because I don’t want to give up my Sports Car/Muscle Car dreams. But my knees are already not the best. So it’s got to be easy enough for an old dude with dubious joints to get in and out. And it’s got to have enough volume to have parts availability forever as well. So I need a comfortable, powerful, high-production car with relatively easy access.

So... I can’t believe I’m about to do this...

Okay... Deep breath... Here goes...

Challenger. Big Boy Challenger. Preferably purple with white stripes. There, I said it. Feels good to get that weight off my chest.

I already have mine. I have every intention of owning this car to my grave. ‘11 328i Sportswagon - 6spd stick, RWD, one of ~450 ever sold in the US. I bought it new European delivery, and drove it all over Germany and Scandinavia for a few weeks with some friends. Has 54K miles on it now, living a leisurely life as my summer ride at my place in Maine. It’s absolutely brilliant, and does everything well from going around a track to hauling a gas grill home from Lowe’s.

Literally does everything - comfortable, reliable, capacious. If it doesn’t fit inside, you can put it in a trailer and pull it.
