The Legendary Nissan Skyline GT-R Cop Car Is Still Out There Nailing Criminals

Criminals beware: there is a certain police car roaming the Japanese urban wilderness that you don’t want to cross. It’s not an urban legend. It’s real, and it will pursue you without fear or mercy.

The famous R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R police car—now almost 20 years old—was caught on video earlier this month, cruising on a Japanese highway. With at least 276 horsepower (wink, wink) from a turbocharged six-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive, running from this beast is definitely not encouraged.

I know that Dubai boasts an insane police fleet as well, but seeing this legend is something else altogether. Nicknamed Godzilla, the R34 takes on additional street cred in this case because of Godzilla’s role as nature’s great equalizer in his various cinematic appearances over the years. It’s a metaphor that I rather love.

One thing’s for sure: this GT-R would have given Han and his VeilSide RX-7 a run for its money.
