There is a certain class of person, you know who they are, that sees the Zagato-designed Spyker C12 and says, "you know what that Spyker needs? That's right. More Lamborghini." The Lamborghini 5-95 by Zagato, then, is the oddball mixture created just for them.
And when I say "them," what I mean is "Albert Spiess," the Swiss meat-man that commissioned this weird one-off. It's based on a Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4, and is meant to evoke a "sensual design inspired by nature," whatever that means in the context of a Spyker-ish-looking Lamborghini-thing.
Don't get me wrong, there's something certainly striking about the car from certain angles, but I like the original Gallardo more and the looks of the Spyker even more than that. But something about the lines of this new one-off, created to celebrate Zagato's 95th birthday, make it look smaller, and the Gallardo on which it's based is not a very large car to begin with.
The car made its official debut today at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este at Lake Como in Italy, and you can get more of a sense of its lines in the flesh:
Oddly enough, I'm also seeing something of the Pininfarina-designed New Lancia Stratos from a few years back.
Maybe Mr. Spiess does, too. Here's hoping he takes it rallying.
(I'm not joking about the "meat-man" thing, either. Mr. Spiess's fortunes are founded upon mountains of bacon.)
