The might not have ever been a living person to look at a BMW 3 Series and wish they could buy a hybrid rival from South Korea instead, but the Genesis brand is serious about taking on the Germans and everyone else. This is the Genesis New York Concept.
Genesis (not Hyundai!) claims the car makes 245 horsepower from a 2.0 liter direct injection GDi engine coupled to a hybrid drive system. This is an oddly low power figure for the 2.0 engine, which makes 274 hp without any electric power in the current Sonata.
Genesis also talks up the interior, saying there’s a 21-inch 4K curved screen made by LG. It’s a touchscreen and sort of takes the continuous infotainment/instrument panel idea that we first saw in the current Mercedes S-Class just a little bit further.
The rest of the car seems to be largely a design study, and that’s fine with me. This thing looks wonderful, and I can’t wait to see it in production form as the G70.
More on this as we get it.
UPDATE: This piece originally stated the car was a diesel. Nope! Just a regular old gasoline-powered direct-injection engine. Hyundai makes tons of these 2.0 GDi motors, which is a healthy sign for the feasibility of the project.
