Sunshine! Wind! People who hate those things may say they are problems in the Fiat 124 Spider, lovingly known as the Fiata. But no more, because a coupe might be on the way!
It could be imaginatively called the Fiat 124 Coupé, says Autocar, which admittedly also doesn’t cite a source. But by offering a fixed-top variant, Fiat would be able to set the 124 farther apart from the Miata, because Miatas have never come as coupes (in the U.S. market) and likely never will. The closest you’ll get soon is the Miata RF retracting hard top convertible. And Autocar says this Fiat coupe will not be based on the Miata RF.
The decision to separate it from the MX-5 is believed to have been made in order to create greater space between the two models in the minds of potential buyers and to allow Fiat to push its performance credentials to a greater extent.
Which means that the Fiat 124 Coupé (if it happens) will be the Miata coupe that people have been screaming for.
I’m just speculating here, but if we study photos of the heartbreakingly wonderful Fiat Abarth 124 rally concept car, I think the Fiat 124 Coupé’s roofline would look pretty close to that.
As for power and pricing? It’s too early to know any of that yet. Fiat could carry over both to the Coupé. Or it could give it 500 HP and charged a million bucks for it. Your guess is as good as mine.
