Acura recently brought back the Integra name, and the result is a Type S that’s an absolute riot to drive. It isn’t as track-focused as the Honda Civic Type R that it’s based on, but who cares? Most people don’t take their car to the track anyway. Now, Acura has announced that it’s bringing back another name — RSX. Obviously, that’s going to be an Acura version of the upcoming Honda Prelude, right? Nope, it’s going to be an electric crossover.
Now, before you get mad, take a second and breathe. Yes, the Acura RSX was a sports coupe, and an electric crossover is not a sports coupe, but come on. Unless you owned one in high school or college, is the RSX name really that important to you? It existed for like five years and then disappeared. Sure, we love actual cars, and other names such as Legend were right there, but no one can really be that mad, right?
So far, Acura has only released the image you see above showing a fairly attractive coupe-like crossover in camouflage, and the press release was light on details, too. That said, if you weren’t a fan of Honda’s decision to build the Prologue and the new ZDX on General Motors’ Ultium platform, there’s some good news. Acura says the new RSX is built on a brand-new, Honda-developed platform. It will also get the new operating system that Honda calls ASIMO OS and be built in Ohio, but the new platform thing is probably the most important part.
While it may be a crossover, Acura promises “fun-to-drive performance,” and I really hope it delivers on that promise. Honda and Acura clearly how to build cars that are engaging and a blast to drive, so there’s no reason the new RSX shouldn’t be a hoot. Cars like the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Porsche Macan have already proven that crossovers can be legitimately fun to drive, too, and, of course, there’s the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. Will the RSX be as sporty as those cars? Acura will just have to give us the keys soon and let us find out.
