British drivers could soon face DNA tests when stopped for simple traffic violations. The move comes amid pressure to expand the scope of the national DNA database after a government watchdog found it to be mostly full of black males and children under 10.
Police in the UK have the power to take DNA samples from anyone they arrest, regardless of whether they are found guilty or not. Plans are in place to expand testing to other minor offenders as well, including litterbugs. The government hopes expanded testing could make it easier to solve more serious crimes in the future.
