The US Environmental Protection Agency has approved the 60mpg Smart Car for sale in the US. The agency issued a certificate of conformity to the car, which has been selling in Europe for several years, clearing the way for the Smart to be sold in the US by ZAP, a marketer of alternative-energy vehicles and electric scooters. The Smart is powered by a three-cylinder, turbocharged engine, producing 61hp. Power is controlled by a six-speed automatic gearbox. The Smart also features a number of forward-thinking engine-control features, including an anti-skid system that uses engine torque, and a transmission that adjusts between manual and automatic settings. Plus, you can put the whole car in your pocket.
