With kit cars, imitation is the sincerest form of both flattery and economics. A perfectly restored 1954 Porsche Speedster, for example, can cost several times as much as the most well-executed replica. While fiberglass replicas do make sweet custom jobs, particularly for those who'd blanch at the thought of, say flaring the fenders of a pricy antique just for coolness' sake, it's the originals that get the respect. Kit Car magazine covered a gathering of original Speedster owners, who recently paraded their cars in Carmel Valley, CA in honor of the Speedster's 50th anniversary.
