DISCUSSION
This looks like a better alternative. MagLev wind turbine. It turns the turbine vertical and uses permanent magnets to eliminate friction. It also claims that one of their units can replace 500 standard bladed wind turbines. The slower speed might save a few birds too.
May be vaporware, but worth a look.
