Coming hot on the heels of news that Tesla will finally offer the $35,000 Model 3 that was promised, Nissan quietly took the covers off its own set of numbers with dollar signs for the new extended-range Leaf Plus. The Tesla news came at exactly the wrong time for Nissan, as the 223 mile range 62 kWh battery Leaf S Plus will start at $36,550.

While the Leaf S Plus is about $1200 more than a base Tesla 3, the Leaf is still eligible for the full $7500 tax credit for electric vehicle purchases, while Tesla can only provide you with a $3750 tax benefit, giving the Leaf a slight edge, still.

The Leaf S Plus is the least expensive long-range Leaf, while the mid-trim Leaf SV Plus will cost $38,510, and the Leaf SL Plus top-of-the-line model will run you a massive $42,550. The base Leaf, of course, is still available with a 150 mile range at under $30,000.

The SV model comes with a portable charging cable, a leather steering wheel, 17" alloy wheels, fog lights, adaptive cruise, and an 8-inch infotainment system. With the SL you can also add heated steering wheel, heated seats, heated mirrors, LED headlights, power adjustable leather seating, Bose premium audio, and Nissan Pro Pilot Assist—with one-pedal driving.

The good news is that Nissan’s as-advertised MSRP still undercuts the Chevy Bolt by $70. Because that’s what really matters.

DISCUSSION

So the leaf and bolt are both more expensive than the Tesla and don’t care at all about performance vs the Tesla that’s rwd, does 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and corners like it’s on rails. And, unlike the Tesla, resale on leafs and bolts is ridiculously low making the cost of ownership at least $10k more. Why are the big companies getting beaten so handily by a new car company? Why would anyone buy the bolt or leaf?
