Nissan announced last week the company will build its Altima Hybrid at its Smyrna, Tennessee plant starting in late-2006, putting the company's Canton, Mississippi plant out of the running. But as the Detroit News reports, the Canton plant, which builds traditional Altimas, in addition to the Quest minivan, Armada and Infiniti QX56, could benefit from a spike in sales. Plus, by licensing Toyota's technologies (hello, GM?) and building it domestically, Nissan hopes to keep the cost structure in line with demand, which may fluctuate if gas prices remain volatile.
