Mercedes-Benz debuted its production R-Class "sports tourers," the R350 and R500, which, in referring to the new models' use of space, the company equated to a two-bedroom New York apartment (not rent-controlled, natch). The $50,000-plus luxo-wagons, further likened to a "sanctuary" of "safety and security," were introduced amid a dance act, the significance of which we failed to grasp. The cars instantly reminded us of the Chrysler Pacifica, but with more pretense.
