As if Mercedes needed another reminder that quality hasn't quite been job "ein" in its factories lately, the company announced a massive recall affecting 1.3 million of its cars produced between 2001 and 2004. The company is calling back E-class and CLS-class cars built between January 2002 and January 2005 to install new battery-control software on, and will upgrade braking systems on current E-class, SL-class and CLS-class models made since June 2001.
Responding to the announcement, Mercedes chief, Eckhard Cordes, said cryptically and without irony, "We are now producing the best product quality ever and our aim is to ensure that those vehicles in the hands of customers which are the cause of complaints achieve a standard of quality that reflects our highest expectations." Alas, would that saying the words made them so. [Thanks to Evan for the tip.]
