Meet The Grid For The 2022 W Series Season

The 2022 running of the W Series — the open-wheel racing series contested solely by a grid of women drivers — is just one month away from its debut race as part of the Miami Grand Prix weekend. That means it’s time to get to know the drivers on the grid.

This year, of the 17 drivers currently signed up to compete, five women will be making their W Series debut. We’ll run team by team to introduce you to the drivers you need to know. It’s also worth noting that Irina Sidorkova, who had initially been chosen as one of the series’ competitors, will not be contesting the 2022 season after the FIA moved to ban Russian athletes from the sport.

Tereza Babickova

Tereza Babickova is making her single-seater debut after a successful career in karting that saw her compete against her two sisters on the track. Babickova was regularly one of the fastest women on the track.

Emma Kimiläinen

  • Previous W Series Stats: Two wins; seven podiums; best championship finish of third

Emma Kimiläinen is one of the many promising racers whose career the W Series helped revive. After seeing success in Formula Ford, Radical Racing, and Formula Palmer, Kimiläinen took an indefinite hiatus from racing after struggling to find sponsorship. Her return to the W Series has proven that racing is exactly where she belongs.

Bianca Bustamante

  • Previous W Series Stats: Rookie

Bianca Bustamante has been racing since she was five years old, and she’s won coveted prizes like the China Grand Prix Kart Scholarship alongside the Macau International Kart Grand Prix. After becoming one of the women selected for the FIA Girls on Track Rising Stars scholarship, Bustamante had testing time behind the wheel of a Formula 4 car. She’ll make her W Series debut in Miami.

Juju Noda

The daughter of Formula One driver Hideki Noda, Juju began karting when she was just three years old and first got behind the wheel of a single-seater at age nine. Jamie Chadwick

After securing the first two championships, Jamie Chadwick has become the unofficial face of the W Series, where she’ll return for a third season. Chadwick got started racing after her brother went karting for the first time, and her prolific career has grown from there, seeing her compete in just about every discipline of racing thrown her way.

For the past few years, Beitske Visser’s name has been synonymous with performance. She’s competed in everything from open-wheel cars to endurance racing machines at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. She’s an easy option for a championship hopeful in 2022.

Belén García

Belén Garcia has been racing since childhood — a sport she actively contested in conjunction with her other love: Pole vaulting. She seriously began karting at 15 and made her open-wheel debut at 20, taking a win in the 2019 Spanish F4 series. This season will be her second in the W Series.

Nerea Martí

Nerea Martí made her W Series debut season a stunning one. She scored points in every single race to take home a fourth-place championship finish. That’s no surprise to anyone familiar with the driver’s career; she got her start at her father’s rental kart track and had success in her debut in lower regional formulae.

Marta García

Marta García is one of the W Series drivers who has been competing since the very first season, and she’s looking to move up from a best overall finish of fourth place to take a championship victory. García boasts several karting victories to her name, including the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy in 2015 and the Trofeo delle Industrie of 2015 — two of the most prestigious karting awards in the world.

Fabienne Wohlwend

Fabienne Wohlwend started karting at age seven, and her family took to the road to help her travel to and from racing events while, as she aged, she also balanced a job as a banker. She’s the first woman to win outright for Ferrari, and she’s also performed admirably in the W Series.

Alice Powell’s prolific racing career was put on hold until she joined with the W series thanks to a lack of sponsorship — and she immediately proved her prowess as a competitor. Powell has been one of Jamie Chadwick’s biggest competitors for the title, having taking both second- and third-place finishes in the championship during her previous two years of competition.
